Builder: Modern Concept Contracting | modernconceptcontracting.com
Location: Vancouver | Whistler, BC
House Square Footage: 10,000
Bedrooms:
Bathrooms: 4 ensuite bathrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 powder rooms
Outdoor Living Space Square Footage: 3,000

The transformation of this property represents a remarkable evolution from a grand French colonial-style home to a premier year-round mountain retreat. Originally characterized by its stately architecture, the home has been meticulously renovated to blend luxury with a contemporary mountain-lakeside aesthetic.

The extensive renovation involved reshaping the original structure, including the removal of many internal structural walls and the introduction of steel moment frames. This bold redesign allowed for a stunning open-concept layout, featuring a grand entry and an impressive dining space, while modern finishes seamlessly integrate with the home’s new, refined character.

Spanning 10,000 square feet, the retreat features four bedrooms—three of which have fireplaces—along with four ensuites, two additional bathrooms, and two powder rooms.

Designed for relaxation and entertainment, the interior includes an infrared sauna with lake views, a theatre room with a custom 14-foot sunken lounge, and a fully loaded entertainment room featuring a gym, bar, and pool table, with large sliding exterior pocket doors equipped with motorized bug screens.

The exterior of the home underwent a complete rebuild at the back, with significant structural and engineering efforts to excavate down 2.5 levels and add a new foundation. This allowed for the creation of a two-level indoor/outdoor space, featuring over 3,000 square feet of heated patio with two custom firepits, a fully covered pergola, and a stainless steel hot tub. The lower level boasts an entertainment space complete with a pizza oven. Retractable sliding doors open onto Alta Lake, creating a seamless connection to the natural surroundings, further enhancing the luxurious lakeside living experience.

Handmade furniture from Portugal and thoughtful details throughout make this home a true masterpiece of mountain retreat living, where modern comfort and nature blend effortlessly.

A Home that Lives Honorably Within a 14-acre Migratory Habitat

Builder: JH Builders | jhbuilder.com/
Location: Jackson Hole, WY
Main House Square Footage: 4,443
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 3.5
Guest House: 1,016 habitable square feet

This home was intentionally constructed to live in harmony with wildlife’s spectacular migratory patterns. Here, friends and family can witness their seasonal movements, leaving in the fall to return each spring.

For these sound reasons, it was important for the homeowner to put his trust in JH Builders, and focus on designers to peacefully integrate its three pond buildings with its rich, forested landscape.

Throughout the build, design changes aligned to strengthen the relationship between the indoors and outdoors. Impressive European glass walls and lift-n-slide pocketing doors capture expansive outdoor views and allow smooth linear movement to covered decks and the gathering pond house’s restored earth- toned brick patio.

Chief Cliff natural tumbled stone finishes blend well alongside distinct reclaimed timbers. Southern clerestory windows harness natural light to enter the great room, accenting its smooth cedar ceiling, vertical wood walls, and wire-brushed white oak floors. The JH Builders custom-built home is an ode to respectful and personalized design, a place now called home, and a dream come true for the homeowner.

AMENITIES
  • Pristine 14-acre site
  • Migratory pond
  • Two residential buildings with a gathering barn

Square Footage:

Bedrooms: 5
Bathrooms: 6

Overlooking Union Bay, this 7,000-square-foot waterfront residence is a thoughtfully-designed family home and an inviting oasis of space and light. It is also a return to roots, as the new house rests on the site of the owner’s childhood home.

Defined by architectural concrete walls and sheltered by substantial wood and steel beams, an entire wall of lift-slide doors pocket out of sight to open the house to fresh air, an expansive terrace, Union Bay, Husky Stadium and an existing teahouse, which was preserved as a respectful nod to the past.

Internally, the house is composed of two wings. One is all about retreat–a tranquil den, luxurious primary bedroom and bath. The other embraces togetherness–a spacious kitchen, family room and breakfast bay overlooking the water. Between these distinct volumes is a series of lofty open spaces for indoor and outdoor entertaining– an entry courtyard, great room, lakefront terrace and dock.

A subdued color palette of soft greens and dusty blues mixes with clean, low-profile furnishings to create an understated yet elegant foreground to fantastic water views. As you enter the home, the sight of Union Bay pulls you into the dining area of the great room. The sculptural glass chandelier by Lindsey Adelman mimics the reflections of the water without taking away from the landscape beyond.

AMENITIES
  • Carrera marble slabs
  • Waterfront view and convenient boat access
  • Steel and resin stair design
  • Two expansive wings–one for living and one for tranquility
  • Sculptural glass chandelier by Lindsey Adelman

Outdoor living patio square footage: 2,600
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 6

Perched on a steeply sloping lot near the edge of the Deschutes National Forest in Central Oregon, Trailhead House may be the ultimate base for outdoor adventures.

The structure’s geometry is based on a series of blocks that follow the grade of the land as it slopes away from the access road on a dual axis. The blocks are stepped to allow patio spaces to be nestled into the roofs of the blocks below. In the sub-grade lowest level, custom bike display racks flank a professional-grade bike shop on one side and a 12-foot-long fold-away window that connects indoor and outdoor bars on the opposite side.

A theater area adjacent to the bike shop has everything needed to crank up the post-ride celebrations. Hidden beds fold out of walls to accommodate spent revelers. An extension of the Phil’s Trail mountain bike trail system terminates adjacent to the home and leads straight to the heated bike-wash patio.

The outdoor living area features a kitchen with spectacular mountain views, recessed soffit heaters, a fire pit, and 10-foot- tall barn track doors that can be deployed to protect the patio in inclement weather.

At the upper level, a walk-out patio from the primary bedroom suite leads to an herb garden green roof and an outdoor sleeping patio. The steam shower, soaking tub, and three-sided fireplace finish the creature comforts in the primary suite.

A custom steel staircase enclosed by glass on two sides spirals up through the home’s five levels and features a custom LED light sculpture suspended between the stair runs.

AMENITIES
  • Two 20-foot-long islands host gatherings in the custom kitchen.
  • Space to store & display a 20+ vintage and modern race bike collection.
  • Unbeatable views of the Cascade mountains.
  • Outside, the building is clad in a mix of Fundermax rain-screen panels, Kynar-finished composite aluminum panels, dyed-cedar slats, and board-formed concrete walls.

Perched on a bedrock cliff 100 feet above the turquoise Flathead River, this wilderness riverside dream home captivates the imagination. Walking through the great room onto the expansive deck with clear railings, majestic bird’s eye views take your breath away–the winding glacial river far below, to the thick timber forest and neighboring mountains. This homeowners’ dream fishing cabin is intentionally not accessible to the river below filled with cutthroat trout, as their central vision for their mountain escape is low impact on the surrounding pristine wilderness, especially the Flathead.

Principal Marty Beale of Mindful Designs, who completed his undergraduate studies in ecology, environmental science, and sustainable building/design, was the perfect custom home builder to bring this eco-conscious couple’s dream to life. Many aspects of this stunning timber home incorporate themes of green building and sustainability, an ethos Mindful Designs embraces.

With locally-sourced materials, low-impact building practices, cozy bedrooms, and limited tree removal, the home celebrates the surrounding wilderness. This mountain cabin feels as if it has always been there, from the charming bluish poplar-bark shingles on the garage to the towering rustic chimney stack. However, the most intriguing intention is the juxtaposition of two structures: The architectural vision was one of embracing the past and building onto it. The central portion of the home is finished with hand-hewn fir timbers with chinking that is rare in new homes. Those timbers are juxtaposed with newer clean shiplap siding that harks of newness and growth. Nestled deep into a large lot, this home offers the ultimate luxury mountain getaway.

AMENITIES

Custom kitchen cabinets with quartz countertops adorned with apron-front sinks, air-conditioned wine closet, and walnut slab island top. Six-inch-wide high-grade white oak floors. Glass fence on vintage weathered 600-square-foot teak deck. Covered breezeway linking garage to the home. The garage is heated with a wood shop, and there is a luxury custom sauna off the primary bedroom.

Overlooking the Loxahatchee River with over 200 feet of shoreline lies the British West Indies-inspired home built by Onshore Construction & Development. Attention to the most minor details is evident throughout this waterfront home.

The consistent use of elliptical arches throughout the residence creates a cohesive feel for each room that is entered. The outdoor patio area includes lime-based paint on a pecky cypress ceiling that conceals two built-in screens, one for insects and one for hurricane shutters. Both are accessed with the touch of a button on the whole-home automation system.

The wine-tasting room is finished with high-gloss mahogany cabinetry and a hard-coat veneer plaster ceiling with a multi-layer wax finish and is reminiscent of a gentle time past. The home office also includes mahogany cabinetry, built-in LED lighting and a gold-leaf veneer plaster ceiling as the finishing touch.

The driveway pavers nestle a diamond pattern of limestone pavers with turf strips that welcome all. An outdoor tennis court, durable Ludowici terra-cotta clay roof tiles, a Hartman Mahogany door and Sonance outdoor speakers round out the amenities in this British West Indies-inspired home.

AMENITIES
